Temu, which is pronounced as “tee-moo”, was introduced by PDD, a parent company listed in the US, in the previous year. Recently, the company underwent a name change. PDD is widely recognized as one of the leading e-commerce platforms in China, boasting approximately 900 million users. Its success is attributed to the group-buying business model, which enables people to save money by pooling orders for the same item.

On Temu’s website, it is stated that the company leverages its parent company’s extensive and well-established network, cultivated over several years, to provide a diverse range of affordable and high-quality products.

Inexpensive?

Michael Felice, an associate partner at Kearney, a management consulting firm, noted that Temu differentiates itself from competitors by selling products at affordable prices without excessively high markups.

Felice added, “Temu may have identified an untapped market where brands have been producing goods at extremely low costs, and there has been excessive bloated cost passed down the value chain to increase margins.”

However, Felice cautioned that American consumers may not yet be prepared to accept these lower price points, questioning whether the quality of such products will be compromised. He further stated, “There is always a concern about whether the product is too inexpensive to be of good quality.”

Deborah Weinswig, CEO of Coresight Research, cautioned that it is premature to determine whether Temu will be able to sustain its extremely low prices and offer perks like free shipping.

Weinswig stated in a report, “Temu plans to continue experimenting with its marketing and offerings, which is possible due to its parent company’s abundant resources.” She further noted that its launch coincides with a period where consumers are seeking value amid persistently high inflation and economic uncertainty.
